Types
of marriage in ancient times in India
Eight types of marriages were prevailed in ancient
times in India.
1.
‘Brahma Vivah’ :- It was considered as the best type of
marriage. In this type of marriage bride and groom belonged to the same ‘varna’.
Dowry was not involved in type of marriage. Bride’s father performed
‘kanyadan’.
2.
‘Prajapatya Vivah’ :- In such type of
marriage, both bride and groom were young. The bride was given to groom’s
father. Means protection of the girl was handed over from bride’s father to
groom’s father.
3.
‘Daiva Vivah’ :- In such type of
marriage, the bride was married to a person who willingly accepted her as wife.
Such kind marriages took place when parents of the bride were unable to find
the groom or unable to afford the expenses of the marriage.
4.
‘Arsha Vivah’ :- In this type of
marriage, groom’s family had to give a bride price to the bride’s family. The
groom willingly paid the price. The bride price was given in the form of a cow
or a pair of bulls.
5.
‘Asura Vivah’ :- In this form of
marriage, Groom was not suitable to the bride. The groom had to pay as much as
wealth could give to the bride’s parents and then marriage took place.
6.
‘Gandharva Vivah’ :- In this type of
marriage, both bride and groom liked each other. But parents of bride and groom
were not willing for such type of
marriage.
7.
‘Rakshasa Vivah’ :- In such type of
marriage, girl was interested but her family was against the marriage. The girl
could be abducted and marry.
8.
‘Paishacha Vivah’:- Such type of
marriage was against the will of the bride. Such marriages took place when
bride was intoxicated or not in a conscious state of mind.
