Alofonso de Albuquerque, Second Portuguese Governor conquered Goa in 1510. His great achievement was the conquest of Ormuz (an Island in the Persian Gulf ) in 1515.

The United East India Company of the Netherlands was formed in 1602.


The Dutch conquered Java in 1619.


The Dutch captured Malacca from the Portuguese in 1641.

Captain Hawkins, the English merchant, came to Surat in 1608.He took  permission from Jahangir, the Mughal ruler, to settlein Surat. Jahangir     granted a ‘farman’ to the English by which the English were allowed to establish a permanent factory at Surat in 1613.


Sir Thomas Roe came to the court of Jahangir in 1615, as an ambassador from King James I of England. His mission was to secure permanent trading facilities for the English East India Company.


The Dutch established a factory at Masulipatam in 1611.


The Dutch established a factory at Armagaon in 1626.


Madras was made a Presidency in 1684.


The English established factories at Hariharpur and Balasore in 1633.


The English established factory at Hughli in 1651.


The French founded Pondicherry in 1674.
