Haryana state has a significant place in the cultural history of India. Haryana came into existence as a new state of the Union of India on November 1, 1966. The history of Haryana is replete with events that shaped the destiny of the people in India. It has many places of historical importance. Haryana has been a witness to many significant events in history ranging from the early Rajput to later Mughal periods that determined the shape of things not only for the people of the state but the whole of India. The three famous battles in the history of India were fought on the plains of Panipat in 1526, 1556 and 1761 AD. All tribes and invaders that entered India had to tread the land of Haryana to reach the interior parts and various locations that were occupied or inhabited were politically captured by the invaders. It is located in the north-western part of India and bordered by Uttar Pradesh and Delhi in the east, Punjab in the north-west, Himachal Pradesh in the north and Rajasthan in the south-west. At present the state comprises 22 districts.
