· The Strait of Hormuz is a waterway. It is a narrow maritime
chokepoint. Strait of Hormuz is situated between Iran and Oman. It connects
Persian Gulf with Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea.
· Iran country lies on its North coast of the Strait of Hormuz. The Musandam
Peninsula is located on the South coast of Strait of Hormuz, shared by the United
Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Musandam Governorate, an exclave of Oman.
· Strait of Hormuz handles about 20 percent of the World’s oil
consumption. It is one of the world’s most strategic and energy transit routes.
· It is about 21 miles nautical miles wide at its narrowest point,
with shipping lanes often only 2 miles wide in each direction.
· More than 20 million barrels of oil per day flow through the Strait
of Hormuz, transporting oil and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from Saudi Arabia,
Iran, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
· The Strait of Hormuz is considered crucial for global energy stability.
Any kind of interruptions in it may cause oil price volatility.
· There are limited alternative routes to move oil from the
Persian Gulf if the Strait of Hormuz is closed.
